Physical Education
'Building powerful knowledge to grow confident & creative global citizens.’
At the Lincoln Academy, our students are healthy and knowledgeable citizens of the world. They develop their physical performance, their strategic thinking and their ability to work as a team. Students have positive experiences of sport and exercise across a variety of disciplines which ignite awe and wonder, creating lifelong interests and habits. Students are supported to demonstrate their natural aptitude for a sport and compete at all levels, including the very highest. We encourage everyone to actively engage in healthy lifestyle choices through a wide and varied curriculum that will inspire participation. Participation in our curriculum envelops the development of athletes and also leaders, coaches and officials.
Our recovery curriculum supports students' academic progress by acknowledging potential missed learning opportunities, supporting student wellbeing and facilitating enrichment. We continue to develop students’ resilience and sense of achievement, fostering their ambition and celebrating their successes.
We are committed to ensuring that students with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) achieve their full potential and excel in all areas, including Physical Education (PE). Our approach ensures that new learning is carefully adapted to meet individual needs while providing opportunities for all students to be stretched and challenged. Individual Profiles and EHCPs (Education, Health, and Care Plans) identify specific strategies and interventions that support tailored learning experiences, enabling students to succeed across the curriculum.
In PE, students with SEND are supported through flexible groupings and the use of high-quality scaffolding to promote independence. Scaffolding is gradually removed as students gain confidence and mastery in specific skills or sports. PE lessons emphasise hands-on, practical learning, where students develop new skills and concepts across a variety of sports and physical activities. High-quality worked examples, guided practice, and clear modelling of techniques are fundamental to our approach, helping students understand and apply key skills. Teachers frequently use different questioning techniques to encourage deeper thinking about movement patterns, strategies, skills and the knowledge being applied in physical activities.
Learning is broken down into manageable steps, with regular retrieval practice to strengthen long-term memory and skill retention. Technology, such as iPads and sports analysis software, plays a key role in PE, allowing for individualised feedback and targeted improvement by highlighting each student's strengths and areas for development. Progress Support Assistants are effectively deployed during PE lessons to provide tailored support, ensuring students with SEND can actively participate and build confidence while fostering independence.
Our focus on personalised teaching and inclusive practices ensures that every student, regardless of need, can engage meaningfully in PE, enjoy physical activity, and develop the skills and knowledge to lead an active, healthy lifestyle.
